Five Giants of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
Wednesday, July 9 6:30 - 8:30 p.m Cost: $495 Limited to 18
Member’s Only Tasting
The small 9.1 acre Grand Cru vineyard of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet (BBM) is surrounded on two sides by Bâtard-Montrachet and on one side by the outstanding Premier Cru vineyard of Les Pucelles. While wines from this vineyard rarely match the power, richness, and complexity of some of the other Grand Crus, we’ve been seduced over the years by many excellent BBMs, which have won us over with wonderful finesse and elegance.
In particular, five of our favorite white Burgundy producers make superb BBM in the best vintages. We’ve assembled many rare wines for this unique tasting, which showcases 16 great vintages of BBM from five top producers. All wines came from one highly reliable source.
Serious white Burgundy lovers will not want to miss this tasting! Here’s our amazing BBM lineup:
1996 Louis Carillon (94-96WA, 95+IWC, 98WS, 96BH) - The best BBM ever made?
As a sequel to last year’s highly successful Sanely Priced Bordeaux blind tasting, we offer the same concept, using American Cabernet Sauvignon as our theme.
In response to rising prices that have driven so many Cabernets beyond $100, EWS now offers Sanely Priced Cabernets, bringing together 13 superb Cabernets from California and Washington State that retail for $80 or less.
Each of these wines is capable of giving a Grand Cru performance at a relatively modest cost. Some are familiar names, while others are almost unknown. If you love great values and love great wine, come join us to taste these luscious American Cabernets: 2004 Chappellet “Signature” • 2004 Neal Family • 2005 Beau Vigne “Juliet” • 2004 Schrader Double Diamond “Mayacamus Range” • 2005 Shelter 2729 (amazing EWS discovery) • 2004 Karl Lawrwnce • 2004 Stewart (93WA) • 2004 Conn Valley Reserve (95WA) • 2005 Orin Swift “Papillon” • 2004 Chateau Ste. Michelle “Cold Creek” (inexpensive ringer) • Betz Family “Pere de Famile” (93+IWC) • 2005 Andrew Will “Sorella” • 2005 Owen Roe “Dubrul Vineyard”
Wednesday, August 6 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Blind Tasting
Cost: $195 Member’s Price: $180 Limited to 38
California Chardonnay vs. White Burgundy was created with hedonists in mind. Conceived as an excuse to have some fun with 13 great Chardonnay-based wines, for this blind tasting we’ve gathered six stellar white Burgundies and six equally stellar California Chardonnays to satisfy the cravings of any Chardonnay lover.
California is well represented by these six gems: 2005 Kistler “Vine Hill Road” (94-96WA, 93WS) • 2002 Marcassin “Marcassin Vineyard” (99WA, 95IWC, 93WS - sells for more than twice the cost of the tasting!) • 2002 Marcassin “Three Sisters Vineyard” (96WA, 94IWC, 93WS) • 2005 Newton “Unfiltered” (96WA) • 2005 Pahlmeyer (Napa) (92WA) • 2005 Ramey “Ritchie” (95WA)
Additionally, we’ll include a fabulous bonus ringer: 2004 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay “Art Series” (Western Australia) (93WA, 94IWC, 94WS)
Wednesday, August 13 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Blind Tasting
Cost: $265 Member’s Price: $240 Limited to 38
“The 2004 vintage has turned out to be a good year overall. Moreover, it might turn out to be the last reasonably priced vintage.”
Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate, Issue 171
You say that you love Bordeaux, but can’t bring yourself to pay the ridiculous prices commanded by the 2005 vintage from your favorite chateau? Well folks, it looks like the 2004 vintage is the last train leaving your station, and we encourage you to get on board before it’s too late. While those precious 2005s won’t be ready until you are living in a Home for Assisted Living, the best 2004s are thoroughly enjoyable in their youth.
We’ve had enough knockout 2004s by now to flat out endorse the vintage. This blind tasting contains only “wine of the vintage” candidates, based on wine critics’ choices as well as EWS favorites. Looks like a no-brainer to us. For about half the price of 2004 Latour, you will taste 14 stars of the 2004 vintage -- including Latour and Lafite-Rothschild!
We need to receive payment within 14 days of phone, fax, or e-mail reservations. After 14 days, EWS has the option to cancel unpaid reservations. If you have a special problem regarding payment within the 14 day window, please let us know.
